There are many famous geographers that have made the understanding of the earth much easier. They have thought of all different types of theories and maps to identify different land forms and bodies of water. Some geographers have even dedicated their entire life to this kind of work
ERATOSTHENES- Eratosthenes was actually the person who made up the term "geography". Geo meaning "the earth" and graphy meaning "written description". He is extremely famous for his system of longitude and latitude. Longitude is simply the lines that stretch vertically around the whole earth. Latitude is the horizontal lines that stretch around the earth. He measured the circuit of the earth which made map making much more accurate. This helped the Greeks find latitude much easier. He also calculated the size of the earth. It wasn't perfect, but it was extremely close.
ARNOLD HENRY GUYOT- Guyot described the system of glaciers. Glaciers are large amounts of ice that move at very slow speeds. Not only did he do that, but he also created a better understanding of the movement of glaciers.
